Actually, I did not intend to invoke a Nazi comparison, per se, but merely
discourage Bill from "swallowing dissent." Whenever I think of people who
do not speak up (despite their desire to do so), I think of that quote --
and it is that quote which continues to inspire me to speak up on any
number of issues. Of course, this may have something to do with the fact
that I am Jewish and first learned of the quote in Hebrew School.
However, I was not offended at all by Patti's email and did not feel that
she had discredited my email. Perhaps I had misunderstood her, but since
she had thanked me in more ways than one, I took that to mean that she had
appreciated my email and perhaps even agreed with some points. As a matter
of fact, I left on an errand shortly thereafter and was rather surprised to
see so many emails with that subject heading upon my return -- I figured
that the matter was, indeed, finished.
I was not planning to respond to Patti's email, but I now feel compelled to
clarify my earlier use of that quote; if it served to end the discussion,
so be it, but I invoked the quote as my personal inspiration in support of
dissenting voices.
