In my mind, it is not a question of too much
dead money; rather, it is yet another question of
expectation vs. variance.
Even the best player in the world, if pitted
against 1,000,000 complete gamb00lers (for the
sake of exaggeration), would find it hard to
win consistently, simply because the probability
of taking a bad beat would be so high. When
he/she did win, the prize would be enormous
of course. Hence the high variance.
Having said that, I've played several times in
a huge freeroll online (2000 - 3000 contestants),
where the vast majority of the players play like
complete idiots, and I have moneyed maybe 30%
to 50% of the times I've played.
Has anyone seen any good studies of how # of
players in a tournament affects variance?
