Bill and I did some off-the-cuff stuff to try to answer this one time. We
arrived at the idea that the standard deviation (maybe the variance?) of
buyin-normalized tournament results scales with the square root of the number
of players.
This involved a bunch of assumptions, of course. We used the Pokerstars payout
structures (where as # of players goes up, more players are paid and 1st
becomes a little less percentagewise.)
