I agree, and I agree with the argument you provided in support of this.

I also think that the effect is negligible 2 hours into a 5-day
tournament.

But to me the main point is that the conditions of contest should
be specified in advance, and stuck to, rather than modified by
the tournament directors on the fly during the tournament. Whatever
the late entry policy, I think the early entrants would have no
legitimate complaint as long as the late entry policy was included
in the tournament rules. But the situation you described for the
earlier event, where the de facto rules were something like

"Players may enter late, with the stack size at late entry
determined by argument between entering player and the floor"

is pretty unprofessional.
