Ok... It is primarily motivated by the need for
recognition. I'm one of the 'in crowd', 'pros',
'in the know'. These people feel the need for
acknowledgement by their peers. They are motivated
by some of the social aspects of the game. These
are players who have played enough to be comfortable
with the mechanics of the game. They are not
primarily playing to win money and have not thought
things through enough to understand the concept
of "tapping on the aquarium". They are the same ones
that believe you can't beat bad players and will
move up thinking people play "right" at higher levels
and they can do better there. They don't understand
variance in relation to EV.
We might as well make this discussion more interesting
with the following:
Have you noticed that it is rarely the "Asian Gamboolers"
who exhibit this behavior? It is the machismo of the
gamble itself that is important and "putting the beat"
on other players.
