I think advertising is just highly overrated.
Sure I have jammed with J2 or J5s or the like many
times, but that's because I think it's the right play.
Sometimes it's a nearly automatic jam or call if the
stacks are short enough. Usually when I do it preflop
it's against one opponent who I think will fold. You
don't even have to be that sure that he will
fold--usually a slight tell is enough.
I also make pot sized bluffs on the river. I also
often jam for many times the pot with a draw. Usually
I do not think of these plays do I think as -EV at the
time I make them. In my experience in the course of a
NL tourney or especially a ring game, you will do
enough stuff that seems "whacky" just by playing my
normal game that I don't really see any need to
deliberately made "slightly bad" plays to advertise.
BTW most good players don't bluff all-in nearly enough
in NL. It's questionable whether I fall into the
first category, but I certainly don't bluff enough. I
had one player who once told me (I think he was trying
to impress me) "well I only do it once every few
tournaments, but it has always worked when I do it, I
don't do it unless I am absolutely sure it will work."
Well, my reaction was how silly, he should clearly
try it more often...
