The Oxford English Dictionary has an 1848 reference that says "anteed".
I think it looks ugly myself and am loth to allow Limeys to spell our
national game.
Note that the meaning of "ante" has changed several times over the
years. See, if you can, _Webster's Poker Book_ (Simon & Schuster,
1925).
