That's a strange route - I have no idea what you are doing on either 880 or 680. Also, 80 doesn't go to SFO, so you are starting on 101. Anyway a route from SFO would be 101N,80E,580E,5S,58E,15N if you wanted to take 5. Alternatively would be 101S,92E,(option here is either 880N to 238 to 580E, or to stay on 92 taking surface streets through Hayward to 580E which would be faster if you know what you are doing),580E,5S,58E,15N.

It's obviously been a while since you've done it, because you don't go through Mojave any more. The first time I made the trip after they changed it I was thinking that I should have seen the airplane parking lot a while back when it occurred to me that I hadn't been through Mojave.

I find that from the East bay, I take 580E to 205 to 120 to 99S to 58E to 15N and don't bother with 5. 99 moves better, and you don't have 20+ miles of non-freeway 58 between 5 and Bakersfield. The travel distance is about the same, maybe a few miles more, but the travel time is usually less. Definitely not a scenic route. Depending on time of day and time of year, there can be dense fog on both 5 and 99, although 5 is generally worse in that respect.

From the East bay (San Leandro/Oakland) it's about 560 miles to LV, 8 hours driving time if you aren't a maniac (I've done it in leas than 7, but SSHHHH), but that's a long drive so I usually also take about an hour break an Bakersfield, fill up the car, eat a meal, walk around a bit. It's worth it to be alert for a long drive, and one or two breaks where you can stretch your legs is definitely recommended. Time of day and day of week can make a significant difference in driving time through some sections of the route.

One possible scenice route would be to head toward Yosemite Park, leave
on the eastern exit and head toward US-95 past Lake Mono, with Death
Valley within reach as well. But that's probably a 2 day trip.

Other scenic routes involve heading down the coast initially. No estimate on time.

Do's and don'ts: Unless you make it a 2 day trip, don't do it. I've
given up on driving this long.

I have a family function in the Bay Area the weekend of 5/21. My Pam suggested we drive to Vegas afterwards.

1. What is the best the best route? Max: Scenic, Fun. Min: Time,
Traffic.

2. How long should this take?

3. Any dos or don't s.
