If Tioga Pass is open it is most definitely worth the extra day. I
took that route to BARGE once and it was amazing. If you time it so
you are leaving Yosemite at sunset, the views are just amazing and
Mono Lake is gorgeous. If you are lucky you will even get to see a
bear like I did (fortunately from the safety of my car, but the bear
was fun to watch). I stayed the night in Tonopah, but that was a very
ling drive the first night. Staying near Mono Lake is more expensive,
but leads to a more balanced drive.
