It seems to me that there's a related question that might
provide some guidance on this issue. Do you have a right
to have your online opponents' skill levels and play styles remain
relatively consistent from one hand to the next?
If you make a slightly-unsound raise of JoeBlow
because you've pegged him as weak-passive based on
his play for the last 30-40 hands, and now he reraises
because his friend SuzyExpert just came back from getting
coffee and told him to cut it out, have you just been cheated
out of a legitimate expectation about his play? Or
is this just one of those things that comes with the territory,
like playing against a player who is changing gears intentionally,
or against a normally-sound player who is suddenly distracted
by a family emergency breaking out in the next room?
I think if you can answer that question, you probably have some
ethical guidance as to whether consulting with another player
is ok, not ok, or ok only if revealed to the rest of the table.
