Both I-80 and US 50 are north of the Bay Area. Both involve going through
Sacramento first. From there, 50 goes essentially east but 80 takes you much
farther north. Using Mapquest, after you drive about 3 and 1/2 hours from SF
to Reno, you're all of 13 minutes closer to Las Vegas.

I'll second the idea of using one of the lesser known passes although in
late May, you will need to check and see which ones are open as some of them
will probably still be closed by snow. There is no guarantee of anything
south of CA 88 being open.

In addition to the ones Michael mentioned, there is Carson Pass (CA 88) and
Pacific Grade Summit (CA 4) in between Echo Summit (50) and Sonora Pass (CA
108). Monitor Pass, mentioned by Michael, is an eastern crossing of the
mountains to the east of the Tahoe area. To get to it, you first need to go
over Carson or Pacific Grade to get to CA 89 heading east out of
Markleeville.

During the time I lived in the Bay Area, I did all of them between Donner
(I-80) and Sonora (CA 108). The farther south you go, the more beautiful
they get.
