Or do multiple ones for fun. At the end of a 1997 ski trip that had us
staying off of Kingsbury Grade, we decided to go home via continuing over
Kingsbury to the east, then picking up NV 88 which becomes CA 88 and down
there. This was during the period that 50 was closed due to a massive land
slide (the second of two long-term closures of 50 due to slides during the
15 years I lived in the Bay Area).

Actually, exactly one week after that slide. I know because the slide
occurred the morning we were to drive up to Tahoe. We ended up going 80 to
Truckee, CA 267 to CA 28 to NV 28 to US 50 west to Kingbury. I think we
needed chains over Donner on 80, again on 267, and a third time on
Kingsbury. Not a drive I care to repeat.

A couple of days that week we skied at Sierra-at-Tahoe (on the west side of
Echo Summit but east of the slide). Kind of weird to zig-zag around the
"road closed XX miles ahead" barricades (placed to discourage traffic, not
to keep actually close the road) and then take it up to 55 mph on what was
just, for then, a long dead-end road.

Four years later, we again skied at Tahoe after driving up in a blizzard
(this time with a four-wheel drive rental car so no chains needed). The spot
of the slide was quite obvious and it was also obvious that they had
basically paved a new road over the slide. Given the weather at the moment,
I just prayed it wasn't going anywhere again. :-(

NV 431.
